3 tips for veterans with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD as it is known in short, is pretty common among veterans. While not every service member sees combat, there are those that do. It is stressful and a traumatic experience. Just because, they are out of the Armed Forces does not mean that you are able to shun the effects of violence or the stress which comes along with it. That is why a lot of veterans suffer from PTSD. However, with the help of a few tips, you will be able to easily reduce the effects of post traumatic stress disorder and move towards a new life.

Here are three 3 simple steps which you can follow in order to reduce the effects of PTSD.



1. Exercising:

Even though this suggestion might seem a bit odd, the truth is that exercise releases endorphins in your body. With the help of endorphins, you will be able to improve your mood. Moreover, you will be able to handle stress in a much better way. Also, your nervous system will be more immune to stress as well as trauma. This is the reason why you have to always think about exercising on a regular basis. If possible, you have to undertake physical exercise which engages your entire body like swimming or cycling. This will ensure that the number of endorphins which are released in your body are plentiful. As a result, you will be able to keep the trauma and stress at bay.

2. Joining a support group:

Another good option is to join a support group. You will be able to engage with others who are facing the same problem as well. Also, they will be sharing with you the solutions which have worked for them as well. As a result, it will become easier for you to gain the practical solutions with the help of which, you can minimize the effects of PTSD

3. Using self-regulation techniques:

Another option which you have is to use the self-regulation techniques. You can use techniques like:

• Mindful breathing
• Concentrating on your senses
• Meditation

When you are able to opt for these techniques, you will be able to take control of your thinking as well as the nervous system. This will ensure that you are not affected by the negative impact of PTSD anymore. Even though you might not be able to gain command over these techniques almost instantly but over a period of time with proper practice, you will be able to control the effects of PTSD and eliminate it altogether.
