CLEARED HOT: Routine procedure at VA goes wrong

After a ten inch piece of plastic wrapper was inserted into an artery by mistake, Memphis, TN Veteran has leg amputated.

Last year, a local veteran checked into the Memphis VA Medical center for a scan and issues related to diabetes and poor circulation. Yet, somehow he left with a piece of plastic wrapper that was accidentally left in a critical artery of his leg. A 10-inch piece of plastic was not discovered until three weeks after the initial check-in when the veteran needed to have his leg amputated. Doctors discovered the plastic during his amputation procedure while they were cutting into his leg.

According to USA Today, the VA Medical Center located in Memphis is known as “one of the worst” VA Hospitals out of 168. Additionally, the Memphis VA has a score of only one out of five stars for quality-of-care rankings.
