What is Veterans Day

What is Veterans Day? Why do we celebrate it?

When is Veterans Day 2017?

Veterans Day is on Saturday, November 11.

What is Veterans Day?

Sometimes confused with Memorial Day, which is a holiday intended to honor and celebrate those who perished in service to their country, Veterans Day is the United States holiday that celebrates the service of all military veterans.

Past, present, future. Alive or dead, every year on the 11th of November, Veterans Day is observed to honor anyone who has served in the military honorably.

Why do we celebrate Veterans Day?

Initially, Veterans Day was referred to as Armistice Day and it was intended to commemorate the unofficial ending of World War I when major hostilities ceased between Germany and the Allied Nations when an armistice went into effect on “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in 1918.

In 1919, President Wilson declared November 11 as the “first commemoration of Armistice Day.” However, it wasn’t until 1938 when a Congressional act was approved to make Armistice Day a legal holiday.

In 1945, Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran residing in Alabama came up with the idea to expand Armistice Day into a holiday that celebrates all veterans, not just the ones who fought and died bravely in World War I. The idea of expanding the holiday to include all veterans was also backed by General Dwight Eisenhower.

Weeks, who would come to be known as the “Father of Veterans Day” held the first celebration of the expanded Armistice Day in Alabama, during November of 1947.

On May 26, 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill into law establishing Armistice Day as a day to celebrate all veterans, but it wasn’t until June 1, 1954 when Congress made an amendment to change “Armistice” to “Veterans”, naming the holiday we celebrate today.

Quick fact:
While Veterans Day has typically been celebrated on November 11th every year, between the years of 1971 and 1978, it was celebrated on the fourth Monday of October, in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
